Abstract:

The hypoglycemic effect of a polyherbal formulation Xtend® was examined in normal and alloxan- diabetic rats. In oral glucose tolerance test, administration of Xtend® as a single oral dose of 140 or 280 mg /kg b.wt. significantly lower blood glucose level in normoglycemic rats. Repeated oral administration of Xtend® at a dose level of 70 or 140 mg /kg b.wt. daily produced a significant hypoglycemic effect in diabetic rats after 20 and 40 days from the start of treatment. The serum level of alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, urea, creatinine, total cholesterol, and hepatic lipid peroxidation, which have been significantly elevated in alloxan - diabetic rats, were reduced and maintained at near normal values after 40 days of Xtend® administration. Xtend® administration improved antioxidant status in alloxan-diabetic rats.
It could be concluded that Xtend®, besides being potential hypoglycemic agents, have also been shown to ameliorated liver and kidney functions, and improved the antioxidant status in alloxan-diabetic rats.
